By the age of 14, Marshall would adopt the Slim Shady surname and perform as a member of the duo Soul Intent. With money borrowed, Shady would release his debut 1996 independent release Infinite. A year later it would be Dr. Dre who discovered the Slim's demo tape on the floor of Interscope label chief Jimmy Iovine's garage. Iovine, more famed for his successful work with the likes of Blondie, passed Slim Shady off asanother Vanilla Ice and completely not interested. Dr. Dre on the other hand. Now named Eminem, he would take second place in the freestyle category at 1997's Rap Olympics MC battle in Los Angeles. Impressed, Dr. Dre signed the white rapper and the #1 release, Slim Shady LP would follow in early 1999. Selling over a million copies before year's end and landing at #1, Eminem's future was set. The Marshall Mathers LP came in late summer of 2000, moving close to two million copies in its first week and eventually going on to sell 10 million made it clear that Marshall was no longer a passing fad. By the Summer of 2002, the third release, The Eminem Show debuted at #1 making the single most successful rap album in rock history. Although the success is fluent, the controversy is close behind. The rapper, known for putting down homosexuals, raps about killing his child's mother and his own mother, Marshall clearly states that his subjects are mostly for entertainment purposes as evident by the #1 track "Stan" in late 2000. Eminem would later perform the song with well-knownself-proclaimed male diva, the legendary Sir Elton John on the MTV Video Music Awards program in 2001. Followed by a hug after the performance of "Stan". However, the appearance caused a bt of a stir in the Los Angeles community of homosexuals as they gathers for a protest outside the auditorium as the performance played on live national television. Detroit MC Marshall Mathers (a.k.a. Eminem) released his debut 12" as one half of the two man crew, Soul Intent, and soon after released his '96 debut album, Infinite, featuring members of his crew, The Dirty Dozen. After being featured in The Source's Unsigned Hype column in '98, Eminem further made his name by dropping verses on indie singles by artists like Shabaam Sahdeeq and OldWorlDisorder. By the time he released his "Just Don't Give a Fuck" 12" and Slim Shady EP, Eminem was an underground sensation. Eminem's solid reputation as a lyricist earned him the respect of the powerful Dr. Dre, who signed him to his Aftermath label. Eminem's debut on Aftermath, The Slim Shady LP, hit No. 2 on the Billboard album charts within weeks of its release thanks to the breakthrough success of the single "My Name Is." Eminem received two awards at the 42nd Annual Grammys: Best Rap Solo Performance for "My Name Is" and Best Rap Album for The Slim Shady LP. He also records as one of the newer members of the New Jersey-based Outsidaz crew. Eminem's latest, The Marshall Mathers LP, was released in May 2000, causing his popularity and infamy to rise in equal measure. Never a stranger to controversy, his appearance at the 2000 MTV Music Awards and his nomination for several awards at the 43rd Annual Grammys -- including Album Of The Year and Best Rap Album for Marshall Mathers -- angered Gay and Lesbian organizations like the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, who condemned his lyrics as homophobic and misogynist. With the date of the Grammys drawing nearer, GLAAD and associated groups vowed to protest. as they had earlier at the MTV Awards. The Grammys, in the meantime, announced that Eminem would perform with Elton John at the February 21 awards ceremony. The Name Game: This rapper from Detroit has so many names and nicknames that some people don't realize they're all the same person. Marshall Bruce Mathers III, is what Eminem was named when he was born. He uses Eminem as his rap name because it represents his initial "M-and-M" - get it? Also, he uses the nick Slim Shady sometimes to express his rougher, meaner alter-ego (the other side of his personality.) Tickin the World Off: Marshall was discovered by rap icon, Dr. Dre and ever since his first big label CD dropped, The Slim Shady LP, he's been creating an upset with his lyrics and his style. Although some people (the US Congress, Tipper Gore and others) consider him a "bad influence" on youth, but fans can't get enough of Eminem or his music. He's considered the number one rap artist in the world. Not a Moma's Boy: Eminem, as most fans know from his lyrics, is not a moma's boy. In fact, his mom, Debbie Mathers-Briggs, has sued him because his lyrics smash her so much. Maybe it's because of his rough situation with his mom growing up that Eminem has tried really hard to be a good father Courtesy of Universal Music for his daughter, Hailie Jade Mathers. And The Oscar Goes To... Eminem's tune, Lose Yourself, won an Oscar for Best Original Song at the 2003 Academy Awards. The song was from his debut movie, 8 Mile which was semi-autobiographical. Did You Know... When Eminem was young, he was bullied so badly, that a fight actually put him in a coma. Despite what people think, Eminem did not spend his whole life in trouble with the law. His first arrest came when he was 20 years old and it was for shooting a paintgun at a police car. Charges were dropped. Marshall Mathers has a younger half-brother named Nathan. Nathan Mathers lives part-time with Eminem in his Detroit mansion. Quote: "It'd be stupid for me to sit here and say that there aren't kids who took up to me, but my responsibility is not to them. I'm not a baby sitter. " - Eminem on being considered a role model. I think Eminem is so fine and if I had one wish it would be to meet him. I love his songs, but my #1 favorite is Superman. Shady can you be my Superman? I love you!!!
