Josh is the oldest of four children, who all grew up together in St. Paul, Minnesota. After their parents' divorce, their mother moved back to San Francisco, and the kids remained in St. Paul with their father, who married Molly, their stepmother. Josh attended Navtivity of Our Lord School grade in St. Paul, and Cretin- Derham Hall before transferring to South High School. His parents wanted him to go to the same Catholic school they had attended. He had a choice of schools, but they offered to pay only for the school they went to. He hated the uniform, and the conformity. He did what any self-respected rebellious teenage kid would do. "I defined my character by being the opposite of what the school told me to be", he addmitted. "That was unhealthy". In high school, Josh played on the football team until a knee injury put an end to his football career. Josh's aunt persuaded him into auditioning for the lead role of Huck Finn in Mark Twain's 'Tom Sawyer'. With a successful run, Josh later went on to garner roles in such productions as Freedom Riders, and Into the Woods. He then moved to New York and went to SUNY, where he studied acting. Although shortly after enrolling he was kicked out because he had disagreements with the way that it was run "They took in 26 of us and the first day they told us only 7 of us would graduate. And that's not a good position to put a volatile young actor in, to pin 'em against eachother. So anyway, I told them that's probably not the best way to go about it, in this very eloquently written letter. And they really didn't appreciate it." He then moved to Los Angeles and within three months, he landed the part on the short-lived TV series, Cracker. Unfortunately, the show didn't get very high ratings and was cancelled soon after. This did not stop Josh from landing a lead role in the 1998 film, "Halloween: H2O", which co-starred screen legend, Jamie Lee Curtis. He next landed the role of rebellious Zeke in the Kevin Williamson written 'The Faculty'. Whilst filming The Faculty Josh was personally asked by Sofia Coppola to audition for the role of Trip Fontaine in her directorial debut 'The Virgin Suicides' She had seen him in an episode of 'Cracker' and knew straight away that he was the right guy for the role. Josh's big break came when he landed the role of Danny Walker in the huge box office smash 'Pearl Harbour'. Cold Feet "I went and washed the car with my dad and talked to him about, you know, if I really wanted to be in a big, blockbuster-type movie-if I wanted that kind of change in my life. My dad had really great advice. He said, 'Fame can be temporary-you can always quit. Regret can be permanent". Despite bad reviews the film made over $70 million on its opening weekend alone and earned Josh a 'Best Actor' nomination at the MTV movie awards. After Pearl Harbour Josh quickly landed a role in Ridley Scott's epic war drama 'Black Hawk Down'. Filming didn't start until February 2002 which gave him plenty of time to film a more light hearted movie '40 Days and 40 Nights'. He then took a long break from acting and went back to his home town Minnesota to spend time with his family and his girlfriend Ellen. Josh returned to acting in September 2002 when he started filming 'Hollywood Homicide' alongside Harrison Ford. He also landed a role in the Romantic/ Thriller 'Wicker Park' in which he stars in the lead role. The film is due out later this year.
